Limited Registration

The category of Limited Registration allows employers the ability to employ suitably qualified people who are not registered teachers to fill specific teaching roles when needed. This category allows an employer or school (applicant) to make an application for teacher registration on behalf of a nominated teacher (nominee).

To be eligible for the grant of Limited Registration a nominated teacher must:

  • have an offer of a teaching position
  • have the required skills, expertise and/or qualification(s) for the duties of the teaching position offered
  • have the English language skills required for teachers in Western Australia
  • be a fit and proper person to be registered.

How Applying for Limited Registration works

  • Employers are responsible for creating and submitting applications for Limited Registration on behalf of the nominated teacher.
  • From 25 May 2026 employers can create applications for Limited Registration online. This short video illustrates the simple process used by employers to apply for Limited Registration online.
  • Paper-based Limited Registration applications will be accepted for a transitional period after 25 May 2026 but we encourage all employers to make the transition to the online system.
  • A nominated teacher will receive an email from TRBWA when an application for Limited Registration is made on their behalf.
  • The nominated teacher will then need to go to Teacher Login to complete the Teacher Checklist items allocated to them.

When an educational institution needs you to begin teaching immediately

When an employer creates an online application for Limited Registration and the commencement date is less than 10 weeks from the application date, a Pre-application notice - Limited Registration will be created automatically.

The employer will populate the Pre-application notice with the following information:

  • The end date of the teaching period.
  • Details of the teaching position including learning areas, year groups, qualifications, skills and/or expertise relevant to the role.

Please note the following carefully:

  • You are not permitted to teach until you receive email confirmation from TRBWA.
  • An entire Application for Limited Registration must be submitted within 14 days of receiving the confirmation email from TRBWA. The employer is responsible for progressing the entire application, however, you will be required to complete a Teacher Checklist.
  • If the Application is not submitted within 14 days, then you may no longer be eligible to teach.
  • If a Pre-application Notice is not submitted you are not legally authorised to teach until Limited Registration has been granted.
  • There may be employer/educational institution-related requirements which a person may need to meet before they are able to teach (e.g. screening number). Employer-related requirements are separate from the TRBWA registration process and are outside of the control of the TRBWA.

Completing an entire Application for Limited Registration

When an employer creates an online application for Limited Registration they will populate the application with the following information:

  • The end date of the teaching period.
  • Details of the teaching position including learning areas, year groups, qualifications, skills and/or expertise relevant to the role.

Once the employer has completed this, first part of the application you as the nominated teacher will receive an email asking you to go to Teacher Login and complete the Teacher Checklist. For more information, see Frequently Asked Questions - Accessing Teacher Login

Once you have completed all items on the Teacher Checklist and the declaration, an email will be sent to the employer who will review the information you have provided, pay the application fee and submit the application.

You will receive an email confirming that the application has been submitted but you are not permitted to teach until you have written confirmation from TRBWA that Limited Registration has been granted.

Employment with additional educational institutions

When an employer begins a new Application for Limited Registration for a teacher who has been granted Limited Registration at an educational institution within the last 12 months, the employer is eligible for the Abridged Limited Registration pathway.

An Abridged application will automatically be created and the employer will populate the application with the following information:

  • The end date of the teaching period.
  • Details of the teaching position including learning areas, year groups, qualifications, skills and/or expertise relevant to the role.

Once the employer has completed this, first part of the application you as the nominated teacher will receive an email asking you to go to Teacher Login and complete an abbreviated Teacher Checklist.

Once you have completed all items on the Teacher Checklist and the declaration, an email will be sent to the employer who will review the information you have provided, pay the application fee and submit the application.

You will receive an email confirming that the Abridged application has been submitted but you are not permitted to teach at the new educational institution until you have written confirmation from TRBWA that Limited Registration has been granted.

Renewal of Limited Registration

To be eligible for the renewal of a Limited Registration the details of the teaching position must remain the same.

The nominated teacher must also:

  • continue to hold the skills, expertise and qualification(s) used to gain registration; and
  • be a fit and proper person to be registered; and
  • demonstrate that they have met the requirements for professional learning.
