Initial teacher education programs

One of the functions of the Teacher Registration Board of Western Australia (TRBWA) under the Teacher Registration Act 2012 is the administration of an accreditation scheme for initial teacher education (ITE) programs.

The accreditation of ITE programs is directly linked to the registration of teachers in Western Australia.

In order to be eligible for registration in the following categories:

  • Provisional Registration (Graduate Teacher and Returning Teacher)
  • Full Registration

A person must hold a teaching qualification from an accredited ITE program or one that the TRBWA recognises as equivalent to such a qualification.

The TRBWA accreditation process is based on a nationally agreed approach to accreditation. Refer to Applying for accreditation for further information on the TRBWA accreditation process.

ITE programs approved by the Western Australian College of Teaching (WACOT) are deemed to be accredited programs under the Act. The expiry of the accreditation of such programs is the WACOT imposed expiry date.  Where no expiry date was placed, accreditation expires on the 6 December 2017.

Refer to Accredited initial teacher education programs in Western Australia for a list of Western Australian accredited ITE programs.

A list of accredited ITE programs accredited by other Australian teacher regulatory authorities can be found on the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) website.
