Professional standards

It is a requirement of registration that you are able to meet the Professional Standards for Teachers in Western Australia at:

Are you applying for Provisional Registration?

From 19 December 2023, with the commencement of the Teacher Registration Amendment Act 2023, there are two subcategories of Provisional Registration, being Graduate Teacher and Returning Teacher (including overseas teachers).

To be eligible for Provisional Registration (Graduate Teacher), you need to be able to meet the Professional Standards at the Graduate Career Stage.

If you have graduated from an accredited initial teacher education (ITE) program from Australia or New Zealand or have an early childhood teaching qualification approved by the Australian Children' s Education and Care Quality Agency (ACECQA), within the five years prior to application, you are considered  to have met the Professional Standards at the Graduate Career Stage.

To be eligible for Provisional Registration (Returning Teacher), there is no requirement to meet the professional standards.

Do you currently hold Provisional Registration?

If you currently hold Provisional Registration, before your registration expires, you will need to apply to change category to Full Registration. (The Board will only consider renewing Provisional Registration if there are sufficient reasons for doing so).

To change category to Full Registration, you will need to demonstrate that you meet the Professional Standards at the Proficient Career Stage. To be in a position to meet the Professional Standards at the Proficient Career Stage, it is a requirement that you have taught in one or more Western Australian educational institutions or other Australian or New Zealand schools in the 5 years prior to application.

Meeting the Professional Standards in order to change to Full Registration is generally based on an assessment of evidence at the school/workplace level and is verified by a declaration from an appropriate person. The declaration must be against a range of substantive evidence and must confirm that all of the Professional Standards have been met.

In circumstances where it is not possible to obtain a declaration from an appropriate person, the TRBWA Professional Standards Policy states that the TRBWA may accept a direct submission of evidence with an application for Full Registration.

Circumstances where a direct submission of evidence may be accepted include, but are not limited to, casual/relief/contract teachers who teach at many schools for only limited days or have prolonged periods of non-teaching between contracts/relief days.

For more information on this option, please refer to the 'Information for Applicants - Direct Submission of Evidence' form or contact the TRBWA at info@trb.education.wa.edu.au.

Evidence requirements

When evidencing that the Professional Standards have been met, you are required to take into account all of the focus areas and level descriptors under the seven standards.

The TRBWA has developed a Guide to Evidencing the Professional Standards to assist teachers in collecting evidence to demonstrate that they meet the Standards at the Proficient Career Stage. Please refer to the publications section of the TRBWA website for further information.

For further information please refer to the Professional Standards Policy.

Do you currently hold Full Registration?

If you currently hold Full Registration and wish to renew your registration, you need to continue to meet the Professional Standards at the Proficient Career Stage.

When applying for the renewal of registration you are required to complete a self-declaration to confirm you continue to meet all the Professional Standards for Teachers in Western Australia at the proficient career stage.

Note that you are not required to submit evidence of meeting the professional standards with your renewal application. Evidence may, however, be requested to verify your self-declaration.

If you do not continue to meet the Professional Standards at the Proficient Career Stage, you will not be eligible to renew your Full Registration.  If you continue to meet all other requirements for registration, except the Professional Standards, you may wish to apply to change category to Provisional Registration.
