Non-Practising Registration

Teachers who hold either Full or Provisional Registration can apply to change category to Non-Practising Registration if they are not currently teaching.

Reasons for holding Non-Practising Registration could include taking a break from the profession.

Teachers with Non-Practising Registration are required to continue to be a fit and proper person to be registered, keep contact details up to date at Teacher Login, and continue to comply with all legal requirements for registration, which includes paying the teacher registration annual fee.

However, they are not permitted to teach or be employed or engaged as a registered teacher in any Western Australian school or early childhood service.

Teachers with Non-practising Registration must return to Full or Provisional Registration to be eligible to commence teaching, by submitting a change of category application, available on Teacher Login and paying the associated fee.

Please note, a teacher must not commence teaching until a change of category application has been finalised and registration granted.

Should a teacher holding Non-practising registration be offered a teaching position and be required to teach immediately, an employer can apply for Limited Registration on their behalf.

How to change category to Non-Practising Registration

Teachers holding Full or Provisional Registration, who do not intend to teach for a period of time, can apply to change category to Non-Practising Registration using the Change of category to Non-Practising Registration form via Teacher Login at any time.  A teacher can remain on Non-Practising Registration indefinitely, provided they continue to meet the conditions of Non-Practising Registration.

Please note, there is currently no fee for the change of category to Non-Practising Registration.

  Conditions for Non-Practising Registration

Holders of Non-Practising Registration;

  • must pay the teacher registration annual fee
  • remain subject to “Fit and Proper” requirements
  • are listed on the Register of Teachers as “Non-Practising”
  • cannot complete Professional Standards declarations

Returning to Full or Provisional Registration

Change of category to Full Registration

To change category to Full Registration, please complete a Change of Category to Full Registration (online form) available via Teacher Login.

One of the essential requirements for Full Registration is that the teacher must be able to demonstrate that they have met the Professional Standards for Teachers in Western Australia (Professional Standards) at the Proficient Career Stage.

Meeting the Professional Standards is generally based on an assessment of evidence at the school/workplace level and is verified by a declaration from an appropriate person.  The declaration must be against a range of substantive evidence and must demonstrate that all of the Professional Standards have been met.

The TRBWA does not prescribe the ways in which a teacher is to meet the Professional Standards at the Proficient Career Stage. However, a Transition to Full Registration Guide to Evidencing the Professional Standards at the Proficient Career Stage has been developed by the TRBWA to assist teachers in collecting and assessing evidence to demonstrate that they have met the Professional Standards at the Proficient Career Stage.

For further information please refer to the Professional Standards Policy

Change of Category to Provisional Registration

To change category to Provisional Registration, please complete a Change of Category to Provisional Registration (from Non-Practising Registration) (online form-via Teacher Login).

From 19 December 2023, there are two subcategories of Provisional Registration. The relevant change of category online form will available in Teacher Login based on your previously assessed qualification data:

Provisional Registration – Graduate Teacher

  • If you completed an accredited Australian or New Zealand Initial Teaching Qualification within 5 years of making this application (undergraduate ITE programs must be a minimum of 4 years in duration, and post-graduate ITE programs must be a minimum of one year in duration).

Provisional Registration – Returning Teacher

  • If you completed a teaching qualification outside of Australia or New Zealand; or
  • If you completed an Australian or New Zealand Teaching Qualification more than 5 years prior to making this application.

Cancelling your registration

If you do not wish to maintain your registration or apply for non-practising registration, you can complete a Request for Cancellation of Registration Form (online form via-Teacher Login) and forward it to the TRBWA.

Once you cancel your registration, you will no longer appear on the Register of Teachers, and when/if you decide to return to teaching in the future, you will be required to apply again for teacher registration.
