The fees associated with teacher registration are collected in accordance with the Teacher Registration Act 2012. The Schedule of Fees is prescribed in the Teacher Registration (General) Regulations 2012 and is reviewed from time to time in accordance with the State Government's general review of fees and charges.
Following a recent State Government fees review, all TRBWA fees have increased to accommodate the Consumer Price Index (CPI). The new fees apply from 1 August 2018 and are reflected in the TRBWA Schedule of Fees.
Payment of fees
Payments made via TRBWA Online payments and Teacher Login on the TRBWA website are immediate. Any payments made via ezybillpay, BPAY, net banking or cheque can take up to 72 hours to be processed. Payments can only be accepted in Australian dollars ($AUD).
Registration fee – new applicants
A non-refundable application fee is payable at the time of submitting an application.
For an applicant holding a qualification from an accredited initial teacher education program or an equivalent conferred in Australia or New Zealand, the registration fee is either $133 (Provisional Registration) or $168.50 (Full or Non-Practising Registration).
The fee for Mutual Recognition is $133.
For applicants holding teaching qualifications conferred in a country other than Australia or New Zealand, the registration fee is $449.50 (Provisional Registration) or $482 (Full or Non-Practising Registration).
Before making an application, you can apply to the TRBWA (fee $313.50) for advice as to whether your qualification(s) meet the requirements for teacher registration.
Transition between categories
For applicants transitioning between registration categories there is no fee. Examples include teachers moving from provisional to full registration and those moving into Non-Practising Registration from Full or Provisional Registration.
The registration fee for Limited Registration must be paid by the employer. It is $223.50 unless the teaching qualification has been conferred in a country other than Australia or New Zealand in which case the fee applicable is $539. There is no fee for the Limited Registration of nominees who are participants in an approved teacher exchange programme.
Renewal of registration fee
A fee of $53 is payable with an application for the renewal of registration in the same registration category. This fee is not refundable regardless of the success or otherwise of the application.
An Annual fee, currently $90.50, is required to be paid by all registered teachers by the end of March each year. This fee covers the period from 1 April of the current year to 31 March of the following year.
All registered teachers will receive an annual fee invoice every February for the full annual fee payment due for the next year of registration.
Teachers who are initially granted registration on any date between 1 April to 30 September inclusive are invoiced $90.50 for the full year of registration.
If a teacher is initially granted registration on any date between 1 October and 31 March inclusive, they will be invoiced $45 for the last half year of registration up to 31 March. For example, if registration is granted on 2 March, an annual fee of $45 will apply to cover the period of registration from 2 March to 31 March of that year.
The teacher will also be required to pay the $90.50 annual fee for the next full year of registration.
It is important to note that there are separate and distinct obligations to pay the annual fee and to renew registration. Registered teachers are required to pay an annual fee for their teacher registration every year. A renewal of registration fee, currently $53, is only required to be paid when the teacher makes an application to renew their registration before its expiry.
Of course, in some circumstances a teacher's renewal of registration may coincide with the payment of annual fee. The TRBWA will send separate notifications to remind teachers of the need to meet their obligations.
Late payment processing fee
A late payment processing fee of $56 is usually charged for annual fee payments not made by 31 March but made during April. Due to the impacts of COVID-19, the late payment processing fee will not be applied in April 2020.
As a result of the extended due date for the Annual fee to 31 May 2020, if all outstanding fees are not paid by the end of May, the TRBWA will take steps to cancel the teacher's registration.
The TRBWA charges for a small number of other related services as listed in the Schedule of Fees.
