How to apply for Limited Registration

The category of Limited Registration gives an employer the ability to employ suitably qualified people to fill specific teaching roles when needed. This category allows an employer or educational institution (applicant) to make an application for teacher registration on behalf of a nominated teacher (nominee).

Applications for Limited Registration can now be created online

From 25 May 2026 educational institutions can use Teacher Registration Information (Professional) (TRIP) to create and submit an application for Limited Registration on behalf of a teacher.

This short video illustrates the simple process used by employers to apply for Limited Registration online. Details of how to create and progress an online application for Limited Registration can be found in the TRIP manual which is linked from within TRIP.

Employers and principals who do not have access to TRIP can learn how to gain access on our Teacher Registration Information (Professional) page

Paper-based Limited Registration applications will be accepted for a transitional period after 25 May 2026 but we encourage all employers to make the transition to the online system.

If a teacher is required urgently

When creating an online application for Limited Registration and the commencement date is less than 10 weeks from the application date, a Pre-application notice - Limited Registration will be created automatically.

Please note the following carefully:

  • The nominated teacher is not permitted to teach until the employer receives an email confirmation from TRBWA.
  • An entire Application for Limited Registration must be submitted within 14 days of receiving the confirmation email from TRBWA.
  • If the Application is not submitted within 14 days, then the nominee may no longer be eligible to teach.
  • If a Pre-application Notice is not submitted, a nominated teacher will not be legally authorised to teach until Limited Registration has been granted.
  • There may be employer/educational institution-related requirements which a person may need to meet before they are able to teach (e.g. screening number). Employer-related requirements are separate from the TRBWA registration process and are outside of the control of the TRBWA.

Creating an application for Limited Registration

An application for Limited Registration can be created by an educational institution on behalf of a nominated teacher through TRIP. Details of how to create and progress an application for Limited Registration can be found in the TRIP manual which is linked from within TRIP.

Please note that the nominated teacher may not teach until the application has been assessed and the registration has been granted by the TRBWA. This will be confirmed in an email from TRBWA.

Under the Teacher Registration Act 2012, the employer or the employer's delegate (the person, usually a school principal, who is authorised to engage teaching staff) is responsible for making the application for Limited Registration and paying the applicable registration fee. Current application fees can be found in the Schedule of Fees

Abridged application for Limited Registration

If a nominated teacher has been granted Limited Registration at another educational institution within the last 12 months, additional applications can be made on behalf of the same teacher at no cost.

When making an application for Limited Registration online a teacher who already holds Limited Registration will automatically be identified and an Abridged application for Limited Registration will be created. There is an expiry date for this pathway so an Abridged application must be submitted before this deadline.

If a Pre-application Notice has been submitted, a nominated teacher can commence teaching immediately upon receipt of written acknowledgement by the TRBWA. The Abridged LR application must be made within 14 days of receiving this written confirmation.

If a Pre-application Notice is not submitted, a nominated teacher will not be legally authorised to teach until the Limited Registration has been granted. The Abridged application for Limited Registration will be assessed independently and the nominated teacher must:

  • have an offer of a teaching position
  • have the required skills, expertise and/or qualification(s) for the duties of the teaching position
  • meet the English language requirements for Limited Registration with respect to the position offered.
