1. How do I confirm that a teacher is registered?

For schools:  The Teacher Register Information (Professional) or TRIP, is an online tool to assist employers and principals manage their obligations to employ only registered teachers.

An employer could sight a teacher's photographic identification document (e.g. Passport or drivers licence) and confirm through TRIP or the Register of Teachers, the currency of the individual's registration.

The information on TRIP and the Register of Teachers is updated in real time, and may be used to verify the registration status of all teachers in an educational venue at any time.

For educational venues other than schools:  An employer can sight a teacher's photographic identification document (e.g. Passport or drivers licence) and grant or renewal of registration letter, and confirm the currency of the teacher's registration through the Register of Teachers

The information on the Register of Teachers is updated in real time, and may be used to verify the registration status of all teachers in an educational venue at any time.

2. How do I check the expiry date of a teacher's registration?

This information is available through the Teacher Register Information (Professional) or TRIP.

3. Who needs to be registered in WA?

The Teacher Registration Act 2012 (Act) gives the following definition:

Teach means to undertake duties in an educational venue that include —

  • the delivery of an educational programme designed to implement a prescribed curriculum and the assessment of student participation in such an educational programme
  • the administration of any such educational programme, but does not include duties of the kind undertaken —

by a teacher's aide or a education assistant, or by a student teacher on practicum placement

by a person employed or engaged to provide care at a child care centre but who is not employed or engaged to teach at that centre

by an unpaid volunteer, unless the volunteer is undertaking duties of a kind, or to an extent, prescribed for the purposes of this paragraph

by such persons, or in such circumstances, if any, as are prescribed.

Requirement to be registered

Section 6 of the Act states a person must not teach in an educational venue unless the person is a registered teacher.

Penalties under the Act:

  • for a first offence, a fine of $5000
  • for a second or subsequent offence, a fine of $10000

The prescribed curricula are:

  • the Early Years Learning Framework under the National Quality Framework the Australian (or national) curriculum
  • any alternative curriculum framework published on the ACARA Recognition Register
  • the School Curriculum and Standards Authority outline of curriculum and assessment in schools as well as any course developed, caused to be developed or accredited by the Authority
  • the Certificate in General Education for Adults
  • the Advanced Placement Program developed by the College Board (USA)
  • the International Baccalaureate Diploma (noting that the other International Baccalaureate programs are published on the ACARA Recognition Register).

4. What should I do if I suspect a teacher is unregistered?

If a person's details do not appear on the Register of Teachers, they may not be entitled to teach in Western Australia. There are, however, provisions for an individual to teach when their name is not on the Register of Teachers if a school has complied with certain requirements in making an application for Limited Registration on their behalf.

Please be aware, it is an offence under section 7 of the Teacher Registration Act 2012 to appoint, employ, engage or otherwise give permission to another person to teach in an educational venue unless the other person is a registered teacher.

Should it be believed that an individual may be teaching in contravention of the Act, the TRBWA should be supplied detailed information to facilitate an investigation into the situation.

5. What are my responsibilities in the Limited Registration application process?

Under the Teacher Registration Act, the employer or the employer's delegate (the person, usually a school principal, who is authorised to engage teaching staff) is responsible for making the application for Limited Registration and paying the applicable registration fee.
