Overseas (international) criminal record checks

1. I am currently registered.  Do I need to obtain an overseas criminal record check when I apply to renew or for a different category of registration ?

Currently registered teachers are required to provide with their application, an overseas criminal record check (OCRC) from each country they have resided in for a cumulative* period of 12 months or more, from 18 years of age, during their current registration period. This can be obtained from our approved OCRC provider fit2work. OCRCs issued by other providers will not be accepted.

More information on OCRCs for existing teachers.

*Cumulative – the total time spent in the country in your current registration period.

Example – If you currently hold Full Registration, which was last renewed in 2012, and you spent 6 months in the UK in 2015 and another 6 months in 2016, the total time spent in the UK would be 12 months within your current registration period. You would therefore be required to provide an OCRC from the UK when you apply to renew your registration in 2017.

2. I am not currently registered.  Do I need to obtain an overseas criminal record check when I apply for registration ?

Applicants not currently registered with the TRBWA are required to provide, with their application, an overseas criminal record check (OCRC) from each country they have resided in for a cumulative* period of 12 months or more, from 18 years of age, during the 10 years prior to making their application for registration. This can be obtained from our approved OCRC provider fit2work. OCRCs issued by other providers will not be accepted.

*Cumulative – the total time spent in each individual country in the 10 years prior to application.

Example – If you are not currently registered, this means that if you spent 6 months in the UK in 2014 and another 6 months in 2016, the total time spent in the UK would be 12 months in the past 10 years. You would therefore be required to provide an OCRC from the UK.
